Totem (23.5" x 31.5", oil on canvas, Jan. 2001)
My friend Ron Hinson uses a wire mesh screen to create textured patterns. I stole this technique from him. All the tiny white squares were done by laying a sheet of chicken wire on the canvas and painting over it with white. The red, green and white streaks in the top center portion were done by scraping through dark paint to reveal lighter colors below. The white slashes next to this area were laid on with a brush after everything else was painted, so we have almost identical strokes done above and below the surface. When you come right down to it, surface and space (and I don’t mean illusory space) is what many of my paintings are all about.
