Rocky Balboa
(15" x 12", oil on board, Feb. 2000)

Small paintings give me fits. I much prefer working on canvases that are large enough that I can paint with a big sweep of my arm, and I've never been into precise, detailed work. This one lacked definition until I taped off an X-shape and painted it with transparent blues and greens. I liked the glassy transparency and the crispness of the edge. The whole thing seemed to snap into place once I painted the X. It reminds me of the scene in "Rocky" where he runs up the steps and holds his hands up in a triumphant gesture, so that's where the title comes from.
