Phoenix
(31" x 23.5", oil on canvas, Feb. 2001)

The hard-edge stripes upper left were the final touch.  I kept making little changes, and nothing seemed to work.  Then I did those stripes and everything else just snapped.

People often ask me about the stripes, dots and checkerboard patterns in my paintings. These are used as unifying elements that hold all the more amorphous shapes together. And I think of the combination of patterns with more amorphous shapes, along with the combination of sharp and soft edges, as a kind of signature style.
