The Last? Gerbils

10 1/2" x 14", oil stick on paper, 1989

The story behind "Champagne Summer"

"Champagne Summer" (below) grew out of earlier paintings.

Between 1988 and 1990 I did a series of paintings of silly looking men and women in beach chairs. I thought of them as the human equivalent of gerbils (I can't remember why) and gave them names like "Gerbil Family" and "L.A. Gerbils."  They were mostly done with oil sticks on paper. One of the last in the series I titled "The Last? Gerbils" (top left).

In 2005 I scanned many of my early figure paintings and manipulated them in a Paint Shop Pro to create a series of computer art images. One called "Triplets" (lower left) was based on "The Last Gerbils." Finally, in October 2006 I did the oil painting, "Champagne Summer," which was based on the earlier work. So now I have three versions of the same image done over a 17 year period. Will there be a fourth? A fifth? Who knows?
