Breakwater
(31" x 41", oil on canvas, 1995)

I agonize over the edge quality of every shape in a painting. Where one form meets another: Do you make the edges hard or soft? Do you blend or overlap? The possibilities are endless. In this one, I really had a hard time with the chevron shapes. I wanted them to look hard, precise, mechanical -- and yet soft at the same time. I wanted them to look solid at first glance or as seen as a whole, but I wanted a variety of marks and color modulations to appear when seen up close. It wasn't easy to do.
