August (8" x 14.5", oil on canvas, 1994)

This is a tiny painting for me. I very seldom work this small, and when I do it’s a struggle to bring it off. The kind of large gestures I make just don’t translate to this scale. But on the few occasions when I am able to make a small painting successful, it usually turns out to be a jewel. I wish I could do more little ones, because they nearly always sell. People can afford them. This one I still have because it’s been in my wife’s office for the past three or four years.
