Casper
(44" x 47", oil on canvas, Oct. 2006)

What I think I was successful in achieving with this one is a balance of very different ways of working, from very loose and wet paint to carefully painted areas of solid color. Each section is painted in a different manner, with a combination of brushes, oil bars and trowels or scrapers, yet, I think I managed to make all the parts fit together nicely. Many of the details, unfortunately, cannot be seen in a small photograph. But that is true of nearly all paintings. They need to be seen in the original.

Earlier version of same painting: "Casper" is one of many paintings that resulted from painting over an older painting. In some cases, I may have been too hasty. Here's what this painting looked like a few years ago, before I decided to repaint it. I probably shouldn't have done that, but it's too late now. The older version wasn't half bad, but I like the newer one better.
